i was browsing the internet, and came across this article on speedometers, gets interesting after the jump

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Who the hell DOESN'T know this?

Claybrook concedes there's no data to show the 85 mph limit saved lives, but she believes it did. She called the ever-higher speedometer numbers immoral.

ITS BECAUSE ITS NOT TRUE, a lower speedometer does not make you speed less.

I would almost be the other way, I know that my car will not reach 120 mph unless it was dropped off of a cliff, so there is no use trying to actually reach the top speed, but if I had a speedo that maxed out at 85 mph, I would probably try and peg it because I know they are engineered to go faster than that.

I've known that cars that have a speedometer that goes higher than the car could go since I was in about 1st grade, and I wasn't even interested in cars until about 2 years ago.

My dad always looks into sports car's interiors JUST to see what the last number is on the speedo, then act as if "holy shit this car can do 200!"

wow, I do expect in a way a car to come close to what its speedo says and this is why a toyota corrolla can't have a 200 mph speedo, but still a car WILL not reach what its speedometer says.

The Marauder speedo on goes up to 140, but it can go a lot faster than that.

The article is by Fox News so it therefore must be untrue. My Volvo can apparently go 160!

Why did we put a boarding school head mistress in any position of authority over our cars?

This is one thing I love about my FoST, it's actually reasonable. The top speed is 154, and the speedo ends at 160.

Cruze Speedo goes up to 140. I've been close. 126. It was foot to the floor and down a hill so there's that. Still, people who think a speedo reading translates to an actual top speed scare me.

yeah, like the SSC tuatara or whatever (still wondering if this car will ever actually enter production or if it is vaporware) has a 300 mph speedo, while its (theoretical) top speed is supposedly 273.

lol, thats how the government works, you put highly unqualified people in charge of things that they should not be in charge of and then they tell the people who actually know what their doing what to do.

I had a car that could do ZERO KM/H!!! the gauge only went up to 140km/h(88 mph) but the gauge would keep going till it went all the way around back to zero.

So in some case the max speed on the speedo is an understatement.

lol, though here is the exact same article on yahoo news, and apparently it was written by the AP. though I do agree about fox news.

on the other hand, here is the exact same thing on yahoo.

it certainly does sound like it was written by Fox News though.

One thing I never got is how some cars have a speedometer that goes WAY above what the car can do. It's one thing if the car tops out at 125 and it's got a 140mph speedometer... that's perfectly reasonable.

But for the past few days I've been driving a HYUNDAI ELANTRA with a 160mph speedometer. Seriously? 160? Couldn't have made it go to 130 and make the gauge a little easier to read instead?

Another thing. Who's surprised that someone quoted on Fox News has no data to support her beliefs but believes it anyway and calls something immoral when morals aren't involved?

My truck does that. Max speed listed at 85 mph. It may be why it no longer works. Too many highway miles at those speeds

My speedometer runs up to about 25 mph higher than the car's top speed, but only 10 mph faster than the ultimate top-of-the-line model, I guess they didn't want to bother with having to design too many speedos.

My '86 Mustang GT was epic.

Kinja'd!!!

The speedo goes to 85.

About 12 years ago. In college. Buddy hops in to ride to the next town and pick something up.

"%^$?, this only goes 85?"

"No the speedo goes to 85 is all, wait til we get away from campus a bit."

Long straight road.

"Lean over and watch."

Drop it to 3rd and drop the hammer, push it thru the gears.

Needle drops past 85.

Keeps going.

"Holy CRAP!" comes from buddy.

"wait there's more. When the needle comes around the second time you'll know we are hauling."

Let off around 2nd 25 or 30mph. Buddy is awed.

I can assure you a 4cyl fox body the 85mph speedometer is about right. I think I did 90 once but really had to push it.

ooh, would that even hit anywhere near 160? my guess would be the top speed would be around 110-120 at most.
